Hitting 100k On Github Sponsors

Main takeaway (the component that increased revenue the most, boosting from $40k to $100k in 3 months):

  1. Create an open source project that a lot of people use
  2. Create screencasts demonstrating useful features of the project, or how use it in certain ways
  3. Release a subset of these screencasts as free content, and restrict the others to Github sponsors only.
  4. Create new screencasts with new versions or on a schedule, keeping sponsors subscribed.

Of course, an easy to see drawback here would be that people will just immediately pay for one month to get the content, and stop the subscription afterward. However, with consistent new and useful content, subscribers may find it more worthwhile to continue the subscription over a longer period.
