Streisand effect

The Streisand effect occurs when the attempt to censor information yields the opposite outcome, instead further publicizing the information. This is due to the tendency of people to resist once they’re made aware that information is actively being hidden, increasing their desire to share and spread its availability.

I came across this while looking into the recent takedown of the official youtube-dl Github repository, and the associated backlash for such a popular tool.
